Roosters Storm Home Over North Beach
After being down 8 – 26 at half time Fremantle Roosters responded to the half time plea from the coach to run over the top of North Beach Sea Eagles 36 to 32, scoring the winning try and conversion with less than 2 minutes on the clock.
After a slow first half the Roosters scored five tries to one in the second half. They gradually got themselves back into the game, with only one lapse when they let the Sea Eagles in easily which blew the score back out to 20 to 32 with still 18 minutes left in the game.
North Beach who were classy in the first half, looked to be in for an easy win. But in the second half they played like they thought they had it in the bag and were flat footed as they watched a disciplined Roosters claw back the lead.
Lee Toon-Poynton, coach of Fremantle looked like he pulled a rabbit out of the hat after the game, and was very pleased with the way his team responded.
“It was due to the boys finding themselves after a half time talk in the shed. They responded well and controlled the footy with only two errors coming home compared with 15 in the first half”.
“Having repeat sets gave us the opportunity to win”.
North Beach coach Jamie Rodgers was frustrated with the team at the end of the game believing the attitude was lacking.
“We defended well in patches but the boys were clocking off when it counted. Fremantle scored four of their tries on the fifth tackle”.
Try scorers for the game included Bill Coughlan and Delane Edwards from the Roosters and Craig Phillis for North Beach all with two each.
Fremantle’s best were Rowen Hastings and Jole Daffin with Mike Te Ao and Rick Williams the best for the Sea Eagles.
2010 premiers South Perth Lions also came from behind to beat a new look Rockingham Sharks 22 to 13. Down 7 points at half time they put on a quick 12 points at the start of the second and kept the Sharks scoreless.
Best for South Perth were Clint Fraser and Josh Clift with Dave Nicholls and Matthew Michael best for the Sharks.
In the other two games Goldfields Titans held on to win 32 to 24 over a better finishing Willagee Bears. Kalamunda Bulldogs led all the way to beat Joondalup Giants 32 to 22.
